The last phase of academy ends with the basic pistol course and firearms instruction from our department certified instructor, Officer Tony McLaughlin. Recruits receive instruction on the proper mechanics of handling, loading, cleaning and firing a duty pistol. The recruits then proceed to qualify on the firing range. They receive training on firing from many different positions and barriers and moving to various forms of cover to sharpen their firing skills.
After the reserve officer's probation period is completed they may attend the advanced pistols course, basic shotgun course, patrol rifle course and the backup pistol course. Classes in active shooter response are also offered.
